Learn the tools and skills to validate your business ideas at our upcoming set of Startup Academy Workshops. Participants work with experienced mentors and other student companies to “get out of the building” and start talking to your potential customers. You will put into practice the approaches TRU Generator startups use to focus on the next step to get your Minimum Viable Product out the door and into the world.
Workshops are located at TRU Generator, located in the Basement of the House of Learning Building, and are free for TRU students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Who are these workshops for?
- You’re interested in starting a business (you don’t need an idea to participate)
- You’ve recently started a business, but looking for the next steps
- You want to hear what other students and entrepreneurs are working on
- You’re interested in learning about entrepreneurship
- October 11 – Positioning Statement: Telling Your Story
How to craft the perfect “elevator pitch”. This introductory session is about taking your business idea and being able to condense it into a short and compelling pitch. Whether you’re connecting with a potential customer, partner, investor, or friend, being able to communicate your idea effectively is very important. At the end of this workshop you will know how to put together a compelling short pitch and be able to communicate an idea effectively, the first stepping stones to starting a business!
- October 25 – The Opportunity: Is There a Market for My Idea?
When developing your business idea, knowing who the buyers in organizations are and “what’s in it for them” is important. This session will focus on understanding the value your business idea brings to the table, how to size a market, and understand the potential dollar value of your market. At the end of this session, you will know how to size a market and its potential dollar value – an important step for evaluating the business opportunity. Having a business idea is great, but knowing that there is a potential market for it is even better!
- Nov 8 – Business Basics
We’ll cover topics like getting a business license, the different types of business structures, setting up a business bank account vs using your personal, and additional resources & tools.
- Nov 22 – Sales Strategy: Start Generating Revenue!
Ever wondered how you are going to “sell” your customers? This session will give you practical tools so you can start generating revenue. Why is this important? Revenue means you have validated customers to continue growing your business! At the end of this session, you’ll have a tool set and resources to help you on your way to start generating revenue.
- Nov 29 – Your Business Model Canvas
Work on your first iteration of a business model canvas. By the end of the session you will be able to form hypotheses about your business model that you can now start to validate by talking to customers.
Participants are encouraged to attend all workshops to gain experience, knowledge, connections, and the tools to get your business idea off the ground. Attend all workshops and receive a certificate of completion!
